Where we are
Doing the paperwork the right way.
Before a charity can ask for a single dollar, there are filings with the State of Florida and the IRS. Here is every step, and where each one stands. We update this page as things move.
Our six steps
Step 1. Florida nonprofit filing (Sunbiz)
In progressDate to come
Our Articles of Incorporation are drafted and being finalized before we file with the State of Florida.
Step 2. EIN from the IRS
Not startedDate to come
The IRS tax ID number for the Foundation. We can apply as soon as Florida approves step 1.
Step 3. Florida charity registration (FDACS)
Not startedDate to come
Florida requires a charity to register before it asks anyone for money. No donations until this is done.
Step 4. IRS 501(c)(3) application
Not startedDate to come
We will apply to the IRS for tax exempt status. Until the IRS says yes, no one should treat a gift to us as tax deductible.
Step 5. Bank account and donation setup
Not startedDate to come
A separate bank account for the Foundation, never mixed with anyone's personal or business money.
Step 6. Giving Tree opens
Not startedDate to come
Nominations, the public ledger and the running total go live. Josh opens it with the first $100.
Why we can't take donations yet
Florida law says a charity has to register with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services before it asks anyone for money. Claiming tax exempt status before the IRS approves it would not be true either. So we are doing it in order: donations stay closed until the steps that allow them are done.
